At the age of 4, Chetan was sent from his hometown Chittoor to live with his uncle in Bangalore, an aeronautics professor at the IISc, for better education opportunities. He went on to complete a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from RVCE, Bangalore and a Master’s in Thermal & Fluid Sciences from the University of Kentucky on a Kentucky Graduate Scholarship. With interests in chaos theory and discrete dynamical systems, he worked as a research assistant in the Advanced CFD group of the school, building and applying fluid flow simulation models using supercomputers. He returned to India in 2006 and worked in the Advanced Technology Operations group at GE-Energy. During this time he was granted 4 patents (plus 6 pending applications) as well completed a Six-Sigma certification.
But the desire to add value in his hometown was strong. He took inspiration from his mother Dr. Bhuvaneswari, a gynaecologist with a reputation of having trained and mobilised a team of small town nurses, and Dr. Sridhar Mitta (Wipro / NextWealth), a pioneer in the impact sourcing business in India. The idea was to train graduates from small towns to deliver work across the globe with world-class quality.
Kriya started as a 5 member team in 2010. The first project was to design photobooks for end customers of a US based company. This was a challenging first project considering the creative process involved and the cultural orientation required. With innovative training methods (making designers watch travel videos and English language movies with wedding sequences etc.) the team was able to deliver 15,000 photobooks by looking at 1.1 million photos from end customers spread across 5 countries.
Since then Kriya has grown from strength to strength taking on a variety of data projects. A key milestone in mid-2013 was working with a large e-retailer to help train and tune their pricing algorithms. The expected accuracy was 99% which the team has now delivered continuously for 5 years.
In 2014, Chetan was joined by Raghunath who was invested in the vision and willing to relocate from Bangalore to Chittoor. Together, they have scaled the business to a 300 member enterprise spread across two units in Chittoor and one Vellore. They have built processes, leveraged technology and utilised the know-how of the engineering and corporate worlds to build truly world class delivery centres.
